Genesis 35:1-36:43: When God spoke to Jacob, He immediately called Jacob back to prayer. Jacob had allowed himself and his household to be involved with idolatry.
When we make a decision to live our lives for God, then we are to put away any and every thing that would take our affections away from serving God alone. He is a jealous God and we are not to allow anything in our lives that is more important than Him alone.
If we don’t spend time with Him, in His Word, time worshiping Him, and time at church, then we become vulnerable to other things and even people that can steal our heart and affections. If God sees this in our lives then He will speak to our heart to come back to intimacy with Him and to put these other things below our relationship with Him. Sometimes there are things that we must remove or put in the proper balance of our relationship with God. When going to church, reading the Word, spending time in prayer, going to prayer meetings, and praise and worship become a duty or just tradition and my hunger, excitement, and passion are not present, then we have allowed other things or people to become more important than our relationship with God. (Joshua 24:15; Colossians 3:1-7; 1 Corinthians 10:1-13)
If we find ourselves in this position, then we must repent and get our priorities back in order or else we will become dull of hearing the Spirit of God and we could become judgmental and critical of those who are on fire for God. We may have to put some things away from us or even some people that are coming between me and my relationship with God. If this is the place you find yourself in, ask God to restore the joy of your salvation.
In Genesis 35:18, Rachel named her last son Ben-Oni, which means “son of my sorrow.” Many of us have been given names as we have grown up like “you will never amount to anything”, “you are so stupid”, “you can’t do anything right”, “you can’t do that”, and we allow other people to label us and give us names. But your Heavenly Father has changed your name, you are the Righteous in Jesus Christ, you can do all things through Christ, you are blessed coming in and going out, you are the favored of God, you are more than a conqueror, you triumph in all things, you are a victor and not a victim, and you are the healed!!!!!! Start calling yourself what the Word of God says about you.
