“No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.” – Hebrews 12:11 NLT
Discipline, that painful 10 letter-word. Most would agree that refusing a freshly sliced chocolate cake would be challenging. First, we would smell its beautiful aroma. Then, we would see its magnificent form and tender texture. All we could think about is satisfying our immediate craving with a few big bites!
If we only focus on the here and now, we can easily become consumed by our present wants and desires. However, if we set our eyes on the end goal, we will have a more rewarding perspective. Saying “no” to that chocolate cake may hurt today, but our decision will pay off big time in the long run. Spiritually, setting our hearts on the end goal will not only posture us for a new perspective, but will also allow us to experience new depths of our Father’s presence.
What is your goal for the fast? Is it to spend more time with God? Develop a deeper relationship, or clear direction? Whatever your goal; remember that the discomfort of discipline can’t compare to the promise of His presence.
Let us pursue His presence!
