Our Belief is in Him Alone | Sunday, January 27, 2019

By Sarah Rutgers

“By faith they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land, whereas the Egyptians, attempting to do so, were drowned.” Hebrews 11:29 NKJV

There was no quick, Google search available to the Israelites on how to cross a sea when you’re in a bind, as the waters recede before you. When God opened up this impossible direction before Israel, He made known His will for that moment and they responded by faith, established in believing God and His promise to them.

The Egyptians also responded by faith to their own beliefs, which were established in their sight and natural observations. The Israelites had just performed it; therefore, the Egyptians assumed they could, too. The Egyptians, whose confidence was in their nature, were subject to the laws of nature. And the laws of gravity and ocean tides fell upon them, a sober reminder of man’s fallibility and misplaced faith.

God desires us to respond in faith to our belief in Him, to affirm our “Amen” (meaning “it is solidly, firmly, surely true and verified and established”) when we hear His Word to us (Romans 10:17). Everything we receive from God are grace gifts by faith, beginning with our salvation. “For by grace you have been saved through faith… it is the gift of God” and “God has dealt to each one a measure of faith” (Ephesians 2:8, Romans 12:3).

We have many good reasons for believing God, and our faith in Him prompts us to action in a firm “Amen” to His revealed will and the redeeming of His gifts of grace. We continue to “walk by faith and not by sight” our entire lives (2 Corinthians 5:7), which brings great reward. And since we do not live by our sight, we can have confidence we won’t be drowned.

Today is the final day of our CL Fast. So, as you have drawn nearer to the Lord during this fasting season, has it solidified your faith, your trust, your confidence in Him? Are you regularly redeeming the grace gifts He has purchased for you? Are you walking more confidently by faith and not by sight?
